An Old Soldier Gone

James Vanscoy was born in Cass Co. Michigan, November 9th, 1833 and died in Winterset November 11th 1900. He was married in Des Moines 32 years ago to Mrs. Emma Griffis.

At the beginning of the war he enlisted with the 15th Iowa infantry and was afterwards transferred to Co. M 8th Iowa cavalry. In December 1863 he was again transferred to the naval service on the Mississippi River where he remained until the close of the war. For the past ten years he has spent a greater portion of the time at the soldiers home in Marshalltown where he was a member of the G.A.R. post.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Follansbee Monday afternoon under the auspices of the Pitzer G.A.R. post.

Death of James Vanscoy

James Vanscoy was born in Cass county, Mich., and died at the home of his stepson, Perry Griffiths, at Winterset, Iowa, Nov. 11, 1900.

He came to Iowa but a boy. He married Mrs. Emma Griffiths, who died 13 years ago.

He was a member of the 8th Iowa Cavalry and spent over four years in actual service. He was a member of the G. A. R. post at Marshalltown, Iowa.

His funeral was held Monday p. m. under the auspices of the Pitzer Post, the sermon being preached by Rev. Follansbee.
