Henson Alexander was born in Hampshire county, Virginia, in the year of 1835 and passed away at his home in Madison county, Iowa, Sept. 26, 1922.
In the year of 1855 he moved to Illinois and from there he moved to Rallo county, Missouri in 1873. From Rallo county in 1882 it was in Davis county, Missouri, that his splendid family of 11 children were born and reared to manhood and womanhood. It was here that the children were converted and in 1894 Mr. Alexander was converted and with several of his children and a large company of happy converts, they were baptized into the membership of the Crab Orchard Baptist church.
He came to Iowa in 1911 and has lived near Winterset ever since. Henson Alexander had a splendid and honorable war record. In the year of 1861 he enlisted in the 50th Infantry Illinois Volunteers. His war record included two enlistments during the entire period of the war. He was a staunch adherent to the principles of the Union army. Though born in a slave state and accustomed to slaves in his earlier years, he nevertheless gave four years of honorable military service to the Union cause.
In the year 1866 he was married to Rebecca Lucas. To this union were born 11 children, all of whom are living. The mother is greatly blessed today in having with her this splendid family to comfort her in the hour of deep sorrow. In addition to these 11 children, there are living 40 grandchildren. Henson Alexander died trusting in Jesus and happy when the hour came for his release.
Funeral services were held at the family home, Friday morning, Sept. 29th, at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. George D. Rogers, pastor of the First Baptist church. Burial was in Winterset cemetery.
