Mrs. Charles Rowe, a prominent Winterset resident for most of her life, died Friday, Nov. 7, at Sun Valley lodge, in Sun City, Ariz. She was 93 years of age.
Mrs. Rowe was the widow of Charles Rowe, prominent Winterset clothing merchant. She was the former Jessie Lee, and was born at Macksburg Feb. 22, 1876. Her early life was spent in that community, and she was married there Dec. 22, 1895, to Charles Rowe. Shortly later they moved to Winterset where Mr. Rowe became associated with Charles McMillen in the clothing business. He continued active in that business until his death in September, 1957.
Mrs. Rowe was active for many years in the First Untied Methodist church of Winterset, serving as Sunday school superintendent and member of the church board. She was a member of the Winterset chapter, Order of Eastern Star, serving as worthy matron. She was a charter member of the Current Topic club of Winterset.
With her husband, she helped promote the establishment of the first country club at Winterset, and promoted city park preservation and the Memorial hospital here. She served on the Winterset library board over a long period of years.
Mrs. Rowe entered a Des Moines nursing home in 1967, after a fall in which she broke a hip.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs Joseph W. Zeller of Des Moines and Mrs. Monroe L. Patzig, also of Des Moines and Sun City, Arizona, three grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and a brother, J. B. Lee of Rosemead, Calif.
Funeral services were held Monday from the First United Methodist church of Winterset, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Everett K. Burham. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
