Dorothy E. Sarwin, 91, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at the Madison County Hospital in Winterset, Ia. Private entombment will be at Resthaven Mausoleum in West Des Moines.
Dorothy was born in Marshalltown, Ia, on October 31, 1917, to Charles and Elizabeth (Studer) Stephan. She moved to Des Moines in 1941 and worked as an office manager for Brownie's Parking Service for 28 years. She retired in 1983.
Dorothy's community involvement included memberships at the First United Methodist Church, Chapter 89 of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Order of the White Shrine, the Iowa Genealogical Society, the Des Moines Women's Club, Beta Sigma Phi, and numerous animal and horse organizations. She will be remembered by her close friends as a beautiful, organized, and capable woman who loved beauty and order in her life.
Dorothy's love for animals, included her pet dogs, cats, horses, and even, Pongo, her spider monkey. She also showed Quarter and Saddlebred horses for many years at state fairs and other events throughout the Midwest. She owned several state champion horses. Memorial contribution in her memory are being directed to Help the Animals, Inc., Box 4001, Des Moines, Iowa 50333-4001.
