BRUCE N. HOWELL, WEST DES MOINES

Bruce N. Howell, 77, passed away June 21, 2009, at his home in West Des Moines.

Visitation will be held this Saturday, June 27, from 3–7 p.m. at Caldwell-Raddatz Funeral Home, 8201 Hickman Road, Urbandale.

Bruce Howell was born Aug. 13, 1931, to Hugo and Muriel (Wilkinson) Howell. He graduated from Winterset High School in May 1949. Bruce served in the Army during the Korean conflict followed by farming with his brother, Mark, and father at the family farm in Cumming. Shortly thereafter, he started his own business, Bruce’s Engine, in Des Moines and operated it for a number of years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Patricia McCauley. He is survived by his daughter, Karen (Jeff) Patterson, Monroe, Iowa, and four siblings — Mary Ann Wahrer, Boulder, Colo., Mark (Pat) Howell, Johnston, Iowa, Craig (Carole) Howell, Connersville, Ind., and Jean (Jay) Mason, Flower Mound, Texas.

Bruce Nathan Howell, 77, of West Des Moines, died Sunday, June 21, in his home while being cared for by his daughter, Karen, with Hospice care.

Bruce was born August 13, 1931, son of Hugo and Muriel Howell, of Cumming, IA. He graduated from Winterset High School and Drake University. He owned Bruce Engine until 1985 and H.O. Wells & Sun until 1998. While semi-retired he worked at Sears, True Value and The American Red Cross. As an entrepreneur, artist, photographer and inventor, Bruce was very creative. He had a great sense of humor, loved children, was thoughtful, and a very kind-hearted man. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was recently preceded in death by his sister, Patricia McCauley. He is survived by his daughter, Karen (Jeff) Patterson, of Monroe; brothers, Mark (Pat) Howell, of Cumming and Craig (Carol) Howell, of IN; sisters, Mary Ann Wahrer, of CO and Jean (Jay) Mason, of TX; and brother-in-law, Dick McCauley.

All are welcome for a casual visitation with friends and family Saturday, June 27, at Caldwell- Raddatz Funeral Home (8201 Hickman) from 3 to 7 p.m.

Donations may be sent to the American Red Cross and Hospice of Central IA.
