HERBERT F. ALLEN, DES MOINES

Herbert F. Allen “Fat,” 90, of Des Moines passed away on June 14, 2009, at the Hospice Bright Kavanagh House. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home with burial following at the McDonald North Cemetery in rural Winterset. The family greeted friends from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Herb was a World War II Army veteran and served as a sergeant. He was a paratrooper and a member of the last Cavalry in existence. He was a lifetime wood craftsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, being with his family and many friends and always doing for others.

Left to cherish Herb’s memory is his loving wife of 66 years Thelma Marie. He was the loving father to three children — H. Marshall (LaDonna), Fred Lloyd (Jaci) and Marilyn Kay Allen; the loving brother of nine siblings, of which three survive — Mae Baker, Lucille Burkholder and Jack Allen; the loving grandfather to seven grandchildren — Michelle (Tom), Brad (Bea) and their mother Sue, John (Suzanne), Jeff (Jen), Lisa (Dennis), Angie (Rodney) and their mom Fran and Jennifer (Marty). He was also the loving great-grandfather of 14 great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all, including “ruff ruff” Maddy. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Central Iowa Bright Kavanagh House.
