Page 1George Simpson Commits Suicide
Word has been received of the suicide of George Simpson at his new home in Kansas, where he emigrated a few months ago from Walnut township in this county. He was sick and also homesick, and had been overworking, and his mind gave way. The remains were brought back for burial. Full particulars are given in the following:
Barney, Iowa, May 15, 1900
On Tuesday morning, May 8th, 1900, was received the terrible news that George W. Simpson, second son of Mr. and Mrs. Antepast Simpson, had committed suicide near Neosha Falls, Kansas, by shooting himself through the head with a revolver, the ball entering the head just above the right eye. His wife states that the last time she saw him was about 4 o’clock on Monday evening. He left the house and when he did not return a searching party was aroused and searched until about midnight but did not find him. The next morning the body was found about one fourth mile from the house. He was in fairly good health and troubles are supposed to be the cause of the terrible deed. He was married about eight years ago to Miss Flora Duncan. To them was born one son, now four years old.
His brothers Wm. And Thomas left immediately for that place and brought the remains back here for burial. The funeral occurred on Friday at 1 p.m., by Rev. John White, at the home of his father, attended by a large number of sympathizing friends and relatives. The body was laid in the Barney cemetery. He sold his farm near Barney and moved to Kansas last fall and seemingly was well pleased with the country, although in some way felt discouraged. Never was such a shock received in this community. His parents have lived here for more than thirty years and are well known over this county. The grief stricken family have the sympathy of all.

Tuesday morning of last week the sad news reached us that George Simpson a former resident of this place had committed suicide at his farm near Yates Center, Kansas. His brothers left immediately for that place to bring the body home for burial. No reason is assigned for the act unless it was ill health. He came in from the field early in the afternoon and told his wife it was too wet to plow. He then was not missed until supper time when his wife went to call him but could get no reply. They searched for him until midnight and commenced early the next morning and found him about one half mile from the house, dead. He shot himself through the head just above the right eye. The funeral services were held at his parental home conducted by Rev. White. Fred Gibbons, John DeLay, Thos. Fisher and W. A. Beardsly formed a quartette and sang, “This too, Will Pass Away” which was very appropriate. His wife will still reside on the farm near Yates Center.
