John Cary Wilson was born July 16th, 1819 near Greenfield, Highland Co., Ohio and died December 8th, 1900 at his home with his son C.L. Wilson, Winterset, Iowa. He was the second son of Adam Baird and Margery Dean Wilson. He was of Scotch extraction and of a family of twelve children.

In 1844 he came to Des Moines Co., Iowa and settled near Kossuth, returning to Ohio the following year and in October married Anna Ellza Mahan of Brown Co., Ohio and returned to Iowa and settled on land on which a portion of the town of Mediapolis is located.

In the spring of 1865 he sold out and moved to Washington Co. this state where he lived until the fall of 1867 when he bought land in Madison Co. and moved onto same where he has lived until three years ago he moved to Winterset and has since made his home with his children.

One year ago last August his brother Dr. W.H. Wilson of Greenfield, Ohio died, he went, attended the funeral and made an extended visit among relatives and friends there and in Illinois. The past summer he spent some two months with his son C.S. Wilson of Aurelia and other friends in that part of the state.

His wife died on the farm in this county August 22nd, 1891 and he now lies beside her. Surviving Mr. Wilson are his sons C.L. Wilson of this city; C.S. Wilson of Aurelia, Iowa; W.O. Wilson of Adair Co.; and daughters, Mrs. Virginia Lovell of Douglas township; Mrs. Margery Sawhill of Valmont, Colorado; and Mrs. Ora Huston of Lincoln township; grand-sons John W. Kilgore of Washington, Iowa; Frank A. Kilgore of 6th U.S. cavalry serving in China; grand-daughter Mrs. Orphie Adkison of Emmettsburg, Iowa.

Before the war of the rebellion, Mr. Wilson was a member of the O.S. Presbyterian church but being of radical anti-slavery sentiments he left the church and never actually reunited with it, although he always gave it his support and died in the christian faith. His last sickness was of brief duration commencing last Thursday morning and ending Saturday at 1:15 o’clock a.m. The funeral services were held at the residence last Sunday, the Rev. W.H. P. McDonald of the Presbyterian church conducting the services and the choir of that church rendering the funeral music. His remains were interred beside those of his life partner at the Stringtown cemetery.

Mr. Wilson was a well known man in his community and was respected for his sturdy integrity of character handed down through a long line of Scotch ancestry.

Kilgore, of Washington, Iowa; Frank A. Kilgore, of 7th U.S. Cavalry, serving in China.

Mr. Wilson was an estimable citizen, a man of substantial character, a devoted husband and father, one whom departure will be sincerely bereaved.

The funeral services were held at the residence of his son Sunday, December 9, conducted by Rev. W. H. F. McDonald, pastor of the Presbyterian church of which he was a member.
