JAMES BERNARD MORRISSEY, Vernon, Texas

James Bernard Morrissey left Rose Hill, Kan., for Heaven on March 14, 2009, 71 years and four months after being born in Winterset, Iowa, on Nov. 14, 1937. He was greeted at the gates by his dad, Bernard Eugene “Pat” Morrissey; his mom, Madolyn Alice Gordon Morrissey; and his twin sisters, Jane Gavitt and Jean Morrissey.

Waiting to be with him again someday are his wife of 41 years, Evelyn Morrissey of Vernon, Texas; his children, Kathleen Slater of Rose Hill, Kan., and Susan and Chris Horton of Edmond, Okla.

Jim is adored by his grandchildren: Emily Horton, Tabitha Slater, Hank Horton, Eli Horton, Luke Slater, Ben Horton, Grace Horton, and Leah Horton. Jim’s grandkids were his greatest joy.

Jim’s family also includes his brother, Ed Morrissey, and wife Clee; his brother-in-law, Richard Wight, and wife Jeannie; his sister-in-law, Janet Lester; and his nieces and nephews: Linda Collins, Mike Morrissey, Bill Gavitt, Sarah Gavitt, Kim Fritzsche, Kristin Aye-Guerrero, Laurie Roche, Richard Wight, Lisa Tatum, John Wight, Patty Schott, and Rebekah Schlatter; and 15 great-nieces and great-nephews and one great-great-nephew.

Jim was the most honorable, honest, hard-working man you could ever hope to meet. His first job was delivering The Des Moines Register when he was a little boy. His last job was working at The Vernon Daily Record in Vernon, Texas. He always read the newspaper every day.

Jim began his business career at Morrissey Motors in Winterset, Iowa. He was the assistant manager of Harrison’s Variety Store in Winterset when he met his future wife, Evelyn. They moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa, where he managed the Harrison’s store there and later the store in LeMars, Iowa. Jim owned and operated Morrissey’s Variety Store in Guthrie Center, Iowa. After moving to Texas, Jim was a sales representative for Hermann’s, Inc., of Rock Island, Ill. He then managed Taco Plaza in Vernon, Texas for 10 years.

Jim’s hobby was business. He enjoyed reading about it and visiting about it. He was president of the Winterset Jaycees; a member of the Kiwanis, Elks, and Rotary clubs in several towns; president of the Chamber of Commerce in LeMars; and served on the city council in Guthrie Center. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Vernon, Texas. He also enjoyed sharing his model trains and trucks with his grandchildren.

Jim’s memorial will be at the Winterset, Iowa, Cemetery where he will join his parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents who came from Ireland and were the first settlers in Madison County, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market Street, Wichita, KS 67202.
