On last Thursday evening at his home south of town, where he has resided continuously since 1866, occurred the death of J. M. Johnston, in the 78th year of his life. He had been a resident of South township since 1850, and contributed much toward the transforming of Iowa, from the condition provided by nature to one of vast improvement. His was an active and busy life until rendered unable on account of declining health.

His funeral was held on the 26th, at the M. E. church, conducted by Rev.'s Rarick and Williams. A very large number of bereaved relatives, friends and neighbors were in attendance. Death removed his most excellent wife and life long companion in 1900, and now the devoted pair are reunited and lay side by side in the beautiful family plot in the St. Charles cemetery.

Of their posterity, there survives the daughters, Mrs. Molly Roberts, Mrs. Mina McGinnis, Mrs. Samuel Switzer, six sons, thirty six-grandchildren, --- great-grandchildren, sisters, Mrs. J. N. Taylor, of Truro, and Mrs. Julia E. McWilliams, all of whom were in attendance.

The six sons were all pall bearers, having officiated as such for their dear mother. --- --- his early rugged constitution had been breaking and the final decline was rapid. As the end approached and death came easy and peaceful.
