A Prominent Resident of Madison Township, Killed by the Kick of a Horse.
On Monday, the 23d inst., Mr. S. Wynkoop, who lives about six miles southeast of Earlham, met with an accident which resulted fatally some days later. He was cutting oats and had got off the binder to arrange the fly blanket on one of the horses. He gave the horse a slap on the hip to get him to raise his foot off the blanket, when the animal returned the blow with a severe kick in the abdomen. Medical assistance was called, and every thing possible done to aid his recovery, but he died on the following Wednesday evening.
He was a man of considerable force of character; was a leading man in his township and will be greatly missed. He was an ardent republican, although he was a confederate veteran. We had an interesting interview with him not long since when he called on the MADISONIAN to renew his subscription.
The funeral was on Friday at the Fairview Chapel, conducted by Rev. J. L. Johnson.

A week ago last Monday (July 24) afternoon, while at work in the harvest field, cutting oats, Mr. Simeon Wynkoop received a kick from a young horse that proved to be fatal. The horse heretofore has always been quiet and gentle, though naturally nervous, but the flies seemed to annoy the animal very much, which no doubt was the real cause of the trouble. Mr. Wynkoop was standing directly behind the animal, and received the blow in the abdomen. A hack was procured and he was taken to the house. A physician was hastily sent for, who seemed to think the kick not very serious, but after a few hours Mr. Wynkoop gradually grew worse and suffered intense pain until death came to his relief at about 10 o’clock Wednesday evening. He was conscious until about four hours prior to his death. He was buried Thursday afternoon at 4 o’clock in the Fairview cemetery, the services being conducted by his pastor, Rev. Johnson. Mr. Wynkoop was a good man and a good neighbor. This sudden death cast a gloom over the entire community. He leaves a large family in comfortable circumstances.

Page 1Obituary
Simeon Wynkoop was born in Leesburg, Virginia, July the 20th, 1843; went to Ohio just after the war, and there married Mary J. Armstrong in 1867. They moved to Madison county, Iowa, in the spring of 1877. To them were born eleven children, three sons and eight daughters, one daughter having preceded him to the heavenly home.
He was converted ten years ago, near the age of 46, under the preaching of Bro. Vedder, whom it was his privilege to hear preach the last Sunday of his life. In the last conversation he was permitted to have with his family, he prayed for himself and his loved ones, and said “the Lord careth for the fatherless and the widow.” After these comforting words he sent individual word to his brothers and sisters, then said “tell my friends at Fairview, I wish them well.” After repeating a passage of scripture, he made all arrangements concerning his funeral. His mind was perfectly clear till within a few hours of his death; so his earthly pilgrimage ended, and he is at rest.
