ELBRIDGE H. DUFF

Elbridge H. Duff was born in Madison county, six miles north of Winterset, October 29, 1878 and went to his eternal home in heaven September 2, 1904.

His boyhood was spent on the farm. While he was a boy in his teens his parents moved to Winterset where he attended the city schools, graduation from the high school class of 1894. Afterward he attended college at Monmouth, Ill., graduating in June 1899, receiving the degree of Bachelor of Arts. After spending a year at home he again resumed his studies in the Law Department of Michigan Unviersity, at Ann Arbor, and graduated from that institution in June, 1903, receiving the degree of Bachelor of Laws. He was admitted to the bar and opened an office for the practice of his chosen profession at Oklahoma City in March, 1904. But he was not permtited long to follow his earthly vocation, but laid aside his work, and studies here, and passed quietly, peacefully in the Gospel hope at the summons of his Lord to the Heavenly vocation.

Elbridge had been a follower of the Lord from early boyhood, and united with the Winterset United Presbyterian church January 28th, 1893.

He has been an honor to his church, a notable example of true Christian life and a beckoning influence to every young man in the community to follow the life of faith and service of the Master. His character is known to all in the community.

Elbridge H. Duff

In the death of Elbridge Duff, Winterset has lost one of her best young men, society one of its most valuable members and the galaxy of bright young men, products of Winterset, one of its brightest stars.

Elbridge has never been strong and his seven years in college which he made years f the hardest kind of work were, perhaps, a tax on his system from which he never fully recovered. He commenced the practice of law in Oklahoma City with very flattering prospects, but after a few months his health compelled him to come home, and notwithstanding the home comforts and care he steadily failed. He conceived the idea of a wagon journey to the mountains which he felt would benefit him. In difference to his wishes the journey was arranged for and on August 16th, accompanied by his father, mother and two sisters started. They reached Omaha in about ten days where he grew much worse and it was found necessary to place him in a hospital where he lived but a few days.

The remains were brought here on Saturday morning and were interred in the city cemetery Sunday afternoon. The funeral was one of the largest ever seen in Winterset, when his many sorrowing friends followed him to his last resting place. Thus another life, full of promise and equipped for usefulness, has been cut off at its beginning, resulting in the shattering of fond hopes and the rending of loving hearts.
