Winterset Madisonian – February 15, 1899
Pg 8
St. Charles

Margaret Patterson was born in Tuscarawas county, Ohio, September 1841. Removed with her parents to Iowa. Was married to John Lyon in Poweshiek county July 17, 1851. At the breaking out of the civil war, her husband then in the prime of his young manhood, enlisted in Co. E, 4th Iowa cavalry, in which he served four years, during which time this faithful wife remained at home caring for their oldest son, then a babe and but a small boy when his father returned. No one who has not passed through the same experience can begin to realize the patient suffering of such a wife during such years of suspense and anxiety, and the brave women who loyally encouraged sons, husbands, fathers and brothers to take their lives in their hands to uphold the flag and maintain the integrity of the Union, have never been accorded a full measure of credit. She died at her home in St. Charles in the evening of February 10, in the presence of her entire family, husband, three sons and three daughters. She had been in declining health for some, time, but a recent severe cold induced lung trouble and something akin to consumption.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Hancox at the M. E. church, of which she was a member. Burial Sunday 2 p.m.

Note: Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
