Death of James Doty

Hon. James Doty died quite suddenly at his home near Macksburg, on last Wednesday evening. He was confined to his bed for a few days previous, but not until a short time before his death was it known that he was critically ill.

Mr. Doty was prominent as a successful farmer, business man and politician and had a large acquaintance in this and Union county. A valuable member of the community is removed by his death. Additional particulars will be found in our Macksburg correspondence of this week.

From Macksburg

On Wednesday of last week Hon. Jas. Doty passed away, at his residence south of town, having been confined to his bed but a few days. It was a severe shock to his family and friends, who were aware of the danger for only a short time before his death. His wife preceded him only a few months. He leaves a family (who are all married) to mourn his death.

Mr. Doty spent a life of energetic, hard labor, by which he obtained a fair amount of this world’s goods, but he never forgot those who were less fortunate in life, and was ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. Although he was actively engaged in political issues at times, he always held the profoundest respect of the opposite party, never allowing political views to interfere with social relations. In his death the community feels a loss that is hard to sustain.

Died, Wednesday, January 18, at 9 o'clock a.m. at the family home near Macksburg, James Doty, aged sixty-two years. Funeral services will be held at the family residence Friday morning at 10 o'clock. Intermetn will take place at the Macksburg cemetery.

Thus another Iowa pioneer has passed to the other world after a long and useful life. Mr. Doty was one of the early settlers in this part of the state having come to Madison county in 1855. He was born in Morgan county, Ind., in 1836 and when but eighteen years of age he came to Iowa with his father in 1855 and settled in Madison county. When Union county was sparsely settled Mr. Doty purchased land in Dodge township and for many years resided in this county. He was well known here and highly esteemed for his noble traits of character his sterling worth as a citizen, legislator and farmer.

It was while he was a resident of Dodge township that Mr. Doty was sent to the state legislature as a representative from Union county. That was in 1877, when he was elected on the greenback ticket, defeating Geo. A. Ide, republican and the late John A. Patterson, democrat. Mr. Doty was never a politician, either was he an office seeker but the members of his party, recognizing his integrity and fidelity, nominated him and so great was his popularity, that he was elected, although the candidate of a minority party. Mr. Doty never again permitted his name to be used in connection with a public office, preferring the quiet life of a farmer and the companionship of his family and friends.

Mr. Doty was a type of true American citizenship, a man of the people, an honest toiler, with a heart filled with sympathy and love for his fellow men. His home life was pure and worthy of emulation and those who held different opinions on the great public questions at all times considered James Doty honest and sincere either in public or private life. His was a character worthy of emulation and the record of his life will be an inspiring page in southwest Iowa history. By frugality and good business management he accumulated some property and his latter years were spent in comparative comfort.

His wife died about one year ago and now the remains of the husband are to be laid to rest by the side of her who was his companion many years.
