MRS. MARY APPLEGATE

Mary J. Chase was born in Clinton county, Indiana, August 26, 1851. She was the daughter of George B. and Martha A. (Anderson) Chase. When five years old, she moved with her parents to Madison county, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood and where she was married on January 6, 1869, to Allen Applegate. Soon after her marriage she moved to Cherokee where she lived for twelve years.

They then returned to Madison county, where they made their home for thirteen years. They then moved to Mercer county, Missouri, living there for seven years. They moved to Cedar Rapids, which had since been her home. Her husband died February 11, 1909.

When a young girl she united with the Methodist church of which she had been a constant member. At no place did she find more enjoyment then in the class room, church and Sunday school. At the time of her death, she was a member of St. James' M. E. church. She was also a member of the W.R.C. and W.C.T.U.

She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Ira A. Moore, Mrs. Geo E. Nelson and Mrs. Carl Lorenzen, all of this city, and an adopted son, Charles E. Stafford of Monmouth, Ill., also two sisters, Mrs. J. L. Simmons of Woodward, Okla. and Mrs. Henry Porter of Tulare, Calif. and two brothers, H. A. Chase of Mason City, Nebr., and Ed W. Chase of Winterset, Iowa. At the time of her death, all her children were present as were one brother, E. W. Chase and a nephew Morse Applegate of Earlham, Iowa.

The funeral was held at St. James' Methodist church at 2:30 Friday afternoon. Rev. Doner officiating. Interment in Linwood cemetery.
