Thursday, April 1, 1880Death of EMEROUS HAZEN
Again we have to announce the death of one who was not only one of the most respected citizens of our county, but was also one of the writer's best friends.
Last Friday evening, March 26th, Mr. Emerous Hazen, of Jefferson township, this county, passed away.
He was taken with a congestive chill on Sunday morning the 21st and after a short illness of five days, death accomplished its cruel work.
Mr. Hazen was born in Grand Isle county, Vt., on the 28th of October, 1829. He removed to northeastern Iowa in 1845, and was married to Miss Maria Allen, on the 16th of October, 1853. In 1867 he removed to Madison county and settled in Jefferson township where he resided at the time of his death.
The subject of this sketch was a man of positive convictions and great force of character, one of that great army of men which has given the West its reputation of great energy, thriftiness and a superiority over any other section of our Nation in the advancement of material interests. One of that class of our citizens who by dilligence, care and honesty become the bone and sinew of the land, and make our Nation truly great.
This sad incident reminds us of the uncertainty of life. On the 17th, when in the prime of life, in the splendor of a vigorous physical manhood, apparently younger, although he had witnessed a half a century, than most men are at thirty-five, he had the pleasure of attending the marriage of his only child and son, and in the brief space of nine days he was but inanimate clay. Conscious to the last, he expressed himself willing and prepared to enter the portals of the World beyond, and thus a loving husband, a kind father, a cherished relative, and a faithful friend, passed from this life.
