JOHN WETZEL, WINTERSET

Johnny Bill Wetzel, 54, of Winterset died Jan. 28, 2009, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines after a three and one-half-year battle with prostate cancer.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 31, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. Burial was at Montpelier Cemetery in Madison County. Memorials in John’s name will be used to sponsor a race held in his memory at the Stuart Speedway (TBA).

John Wetzel was born Nov. 27, 1954, in Winterset to Chancy and Mayola (DeBok) Wetzel. He grew up in the Patterson area, graduating from Winterset High School in 1973. John drove a semi for Ben Shinn Trucking for several years. For the past five years, he worked for Corell Contractor of West Des Moines as an equipment operator. He was a member of Local 234 Operators Union.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

He is survived by one daughter, Brittany Wetzel of Colfax; one son, Jeremy Pagel of New Providence; a brother, Jim Wetzel of Winterset; and a sister, Connie Songer of Patterson.

JOHNNY WETZEL, Winterset

Johnny Bill Wetzel, 54, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2009.

A visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m., Friday, January 30, at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset where family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 31, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Montpelier Cemetery, Madison County.

John will be deeply missed by his brother, Jim Wetzel and wife, Terri of Winterset; his sister, Connie Songer and husband, Ed of Patterson; a daughter, Brittany Wetzel of Colfax; a son, Jeremy Pagel and family of New Providence; a nephew, Brian Wetzel and family of Winterset; and niece, Lisa McDonald and family of Winterset and uncle, Bud Wetzel and wife, Jo of Peru.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
