Nancy McCarty was born in Missouri Aug. 25, 1844 and died at the home of her son in Winterset April 13, 1913, aged 68 years, 7 months, 18 days. She came with her parents to Iowa when nine years old, they settling in Madison county.

In 1863 she was united in marriage to Joshua Bennett. Eight children blessed this union four boys and four girls, three dying in infancy, two boys and one girl. Those living are: Mrs. Montana Duff, Stuart, Ia.; Mrs. Etta Haxton, Oklahoma; Mrs. Laura Bast, Earlham; Leander, Winterset; Luther, DeSoto; also twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Her husband died Oct. 1, 1906, since which time she has made her home with her son, Leander. They moved from the farm to Winterset March 5.

She united with the M.E. church when a girl and has always upheld the church, although not being privileged much to attend its worship.

Besides those mentioned she leaves one brother and one sister, Bradley McCarty, of Washington and Mrs. Mattie Adkins, of Nebraska.

All day Sunday she seemed in her usual health, eating heartily and spoke of going to church in the evening and at 8:20 death came without any apparent warning. Medical assistance was summoned but too late.
