Frank enlisted in the U.S. Army, in January, 1918 and was honorably discharged in December of 1918. He served 2 years in the Nation Guard and was in the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) for several years. He was a member of the American Legion.

On July 14, 1926, Frank married Sara Matilda McElvoque and they farmed in and around Dallas Center, moving to the Earlham area in 1929 where their daughter, Anna Marie was born. Frank had one step son, Raymond McElvoque, that made his home with them. He worked for the Scar, Rausenberger, Marston and Schalkle families and in 1940 they moved into Earlham. Sara passed away in 1957, after a lingering illness. He worked in the maintenance division of the Rock Island Railroad until his retirement in 1960.

Frank and Nora Herrig Martens were united in marriage in 1960 and became members of the Earlham Methodist Church. Nora passed away in 1969.
