Willis White, Winterset

Willis “Whitey” White, 82, of Winterset died Jan. 19, 2009, at Mercy Capital in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. Visitation will be from 1–8 p.m. today (Wednesday, Jan. 21) at the funeral home, where the family will be present to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Burial will be at McDonald-Chase Cemetery immediately following the funeral services. Memorial contributions may be directed to the McDonald-Chase Cemetery.

Whitey White was born Aug. 23, 1926, in Madison County to Orville and Dorothy (Gentry) White. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean conflict. His marriage to Blanche McNichols took place Dec. 16, 1946, in Des Moines. Whitey, along with Bob Jackson, ran the Conoco station in Winterset for many years. He later worked in Des Moines at Dahls for 25 years. Following his retirement from Dahls, he worked as a food broker. Whitey was a member of the First Christian Church, Evening Star Masonic Lodge 43, American Legion Post 184 (of which he was a charter member), and the Veterans of Foreign War Post 8142, all of Winterset. He also served on the McDonald-Chase Cemetery Board as a trustee and belonged to numerous bowling leagues, volunteering with the Winterset Junior Bowling League.

He was preceded in death by his wife; an infant daughter, Patty; and a sister, Doris Eyerly.
He is survived by two daughters, Gayla Hudnell of Dallas Center and Joyce Gorshel of Urbandale; one son, Bruce White of Winterset; and 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
