Glen "Swede" Almquist, 89, of Winterset, died Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at the Madison County Memorial Hospital, in Winterset. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 16, 2009, at The First Christian Church in Winterset with Rev. Kevin Blader and Rev. Sue Blader officiating. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery with military honors.
Swede was born on October 26, 1919, in Shenandoah, IA, to Albert & Ella Almquist. He grew up in Essex, IA, moving to Winterset in 1936. A few years after graduating from Winterset High School in 1938, he joined the Army Air Corp, serving during WW II. On September 29, 1946, he married Mary Frances Wilson in Winterset, and to this union were born two children. Swede had been owner and operator of the former King's Clothing for many years. He belonged to the American Legion, V.F.W., The First Christian Church, and until his retirement, the Winterset Chamber of Commerce.
Swede is survived by his wife, Mary Fran Almquist, of Winterset; son, Steven (Lucia) Almquist, of Sarasota, FL; daughter, Jan (Dave) Jordan, of Cincinnati, OH; brother, Robert (Cleta) Almquist, of Sun City West, AZ; grandchildren, Brooke Finck and Brittni Fudge; and great- grandchildren, Griffin Fudge and Jordan Finck. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Warren Almquist and Irwin Almquist; and sister, Marion Bengtson.
Visitation will be Thursday, from noon to 8 p.m., at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials given to the family will be directed to Middle River Hospice or The First Christian Church.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by McCalley - Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
