Mr. Snyder was married to Miss Rachel Blair in 1866, and became a resident of this county in 1871. Of the six children which were born to Mr. And Mrs. Snyder, all together with their mother were present at his death. These are, Mrs. Emma Shuey and John Snyder of Valley Junction; Mrs. Effie Bishop, Mrs. Minnie Griffith, Mrs. Berteen Clark and Miss Nellie Snyder all of Winterset.

For 27 years Mr. Snyder was in the service of the Rock Island railroad, retiring seven years ago on the pensioned list. For two years his health has been very feeble, necessitating much care on the part of his family. Mr. Snyder had many warm friends who respected and admired him for his unassuming and genuine qualities. Faithful to his duty always, this loyal veteran will be missed by all who knew him.

Andrew J. Snyder

With the passing of Andrew J. Snyder last Friday, December 22, another of the few remaining veterans of the Civil war has reduced the number of the ranks.

Mister Snyder was born at Richland county, Ohio, August 12, 1836. At an early age his parents moved to Missouri from which state they moved to Warren county, Iowa. In 1862 he enlisted in the 34th Iowa Infantry, afterwards being transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps.

In 1871 he moved to Madison county where he was married to Miss Racahel Blair. To this union were born six children, all of whom, together with the mother, survive the father. The names of the children are Mrs. Emma Shuey and John, who live at Valley Junction, Mrs. Effie Bishop, Mrs. Minnie Griffith, Mrs. Berteen Clark and Miss Nellie Snyder, who reside at Winterset. All of these were present at the bedside of their father at the time of his death. For 2 years before his disease Mr. Snyder was practically helpless and was most devotedly cared for by his daughters and wife.

Funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. Frederick Donovan, at the home of Mr. Bishop Sunday afternoon and interment made at Rock cemetery.
