Obituary

Leonard Alexander Mathews was born January 1, 1863, at Winterset, in Madison county, Iowa. He passed from this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Jacobson, of Earlham, Sunday evening, September 9, 1934, at the age of 71 years, eight months and nine days.

He was united in marriage to Dessa M. Pointer, March 3, 1891. She preceded him in death, passing from him in February, 1933. To this union were born three sons and six daughters. William Franklin preceded him in death June 20, 1918.

He leaves to mourn his passing, two sons, Austin G. of Granger and Edward A. of Jefferson; six daughters, Jessie Weaver and Elizabeth Cartwright of Des Moines, May Jaynes of Winterset, Emma Jacobson and Eliza Sheets of Earlham, Hazel Bell of Perry, twenty-six grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Ella Walker, and one brother Edward, both of Des Moines, and a great number of other relatives and friends.

Week’s Letter From Earlham

The funeral services of L. A. Matthews were held Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock at the Church of Christ at Norwalk, with Rev. Feny, assisted by Rev. Simpson of Norwalk, having charge. Mrs. Charles Soderburg and Mrs. Frank Irwin sang two numbers, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Saved By Grace.” The following obituary was read:

Leonard Alexander Matthews was born January 1, 1863 at Winterset. He passed away from this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Jacobson, Sunday evening, September 9, 1934, at the age of 71 years, 8 months and 9 days. He was united in marriage to Dessa M. Painter, March 3, 1891. She preceded him in death, passing away in February, 1933.

To this union were born three sons and six daughters, William Franklin preceded him in death June 20, 1918. He leaves to mourn his going two sons, Austin G. of Granger and Edward A. of Jefferson; six daughters, Jessie Weaver and Elizabeth Cartwright of Des Moines, May Jaynes of Winterset, Emma Jacobson and Eliza Sheets of Earlham, and Hazel Bell of Perry, twenty-six grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Ella Walker, and one brother, Edward, both of Des Moines.

Mr. Matthews spent most of his life in farming on a farm in Madison county. He spent a part of his life near Norwalk and three years ago moved to Earlham, where he spent the remainder of his earthly life. Mr. Matthews was a good father. He loved his home and his family. Burial was made in the Norwalk cemetery.
