EDITH (CARSON) THORNTON, Winterset

Edith (Carson) Thornton, at the age of 95, passed this life on December 23 at Winterset North Care Center. A Celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Edith was born on January 21, 1913, to Frank and Elizabeth (Portersfield) Carson in Woodburn, Iowa. In 1931, Edith married Russell Thornton. Together they farmed east of Osceola from 1931 to 1977.

In 1977, they retired to a home in Osceola. Upon the passing of her husband, Russell, in 1988, Edith moved to Westward Manor. She left the Manor in 2006 and became a resident of Winterset Care Center North.

Edith was a wonderful mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. She was compassionate, caring and considerate to all who knew her. Edith was a lifetime member of the Christian Church in Osceola. She helped quilt many years for people in need. One of Edith's favorite quotes was: "We all fall short of the Glory of God."

Edith is survived by brothers Donald Carson, Weldon; Harold Carson, Osceola; sons Merrill (Lou) Thornton, Urbandale; Nelson (Mariann) Thornton, Winterset; as well as four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sisters Corda Canney and Bernice Page, and sisters-in-law Wilma Carson and Francis Carson, nephew David Page.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Madison County Middle River Hospice or Winterset Care Center, 411 Elm, Winterset, IA.
