Mary L. Aikin, 91, of Loveland, died Sunday, April 11, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Village health center in Loveland. A funeral was held Wednesday in Loveland. Interment was at Resthaven Memory Gardens.

Mary L. Shelley was born May 27, 1907, in Valley Center, Kan., to Jim Shelley and May Hecker Shelley. She graduated from Earlham (Iowa) High School and earned a teacher's certificate. She also graduated from Rudemar Cosmetology School in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1933.

She married Emory A. Aikin on April 27, 1935, in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mrs. Aikin taught elementary school in Booneville, Iowa, for many years. She also had a hairstyling business called "The Beauty Nook" in her home for seven years. The Aikins moved to Loveland in 1951. They owned and operated a homemade candy/cherry pie shop west of Loveland for 17 years, retiring in 1977.

Mrs. Aikin was an active member of First Christian Church and some of its groups. She also was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Royal Neighbor's Lodge and a retired teachers organization. She enjoyed music, crocheting, caring for her violets, reading and was a Denver Broncos fan.

Survivors include her husband, Emory Aikin of Loveland two daughters, Bev Buehler of Loveland and Mary Evelyn Ashbaugh of Fort Collins five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church in care of Allnutt Funeral Service/Hunter Chapel, 2100 N. Lincoln Ave., Loveland, Colo., 80538.
