Velma Marion Sloan
Velma Marion Sloan, the daughter of Claude and Myrtle Marion, was born at Mt. Clare, Indiana, September 5, 1908. She passed away January 12, 1979 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.
Early in her life their family moved to the Earlham area, and she attended the Earlham schools. She was married to Ralph Sloan February 28, 1929. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary next month.
Along with her husband Ralph, she is survived by her two sons, Larry of Earlham and Bob of Adel, three daughters, Mrs. Shirley Ford of Lemoore, California, Mrs. Carolyn Wilson of Des Moines, and Mrs. Donna Smith of Earlham. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a twin sister, Mrs. Thelma Van Devender of Earlham, and an uncle, Nitus Slavens, Iowa Soldiers Home in Marshalltown.
Her life will also be remembered by her membership in the Canasta Card Club, the Christian Church, and the hours she enjoyed sewing, quilting and embroidering.
Services were held at the Earlham Methodist Church January 15, at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Dave Higdon officiated. Mrs. Gretchen Brittain was organist. Casket bearers were Greg Mitchell, Jeff Mitchell, Tim Mitchell, Bob Sloan, Larry Sloan, Willis Smith and Whitey Wilson. Interment was in the Earlham cemetery.
