Chester Mott was born January 15, 1869, near Viola, Iowa. His parents were Richard Mott and Sara Hampton Mott. He was a birthright member of the Society of Friends of which he was an active and interested member throughout the years.

He attended Friends’ boarding schools at Scattergood, near West Branch, Iowa, at Barnesville, Ohio, and at Westtown, Pennsylvania, graduating from Westtown in 1895.

He married Joanna Bowles of Spring River, Kansas September 22, 1899.

A daughter, Mary, and a son, Milford, were born into the home, and a son, Paul, who died in infancy.

In 1909, the family moved from Viola, in eastern Iowa, to a farm near Earlham. In 1949, Chester and Joanna moved into the town of Earlham.

He was much interested in organizations that work for better international relations and world peace and he read the daily news of such events with keenest interest.

His faith in God is well expressed in this sentence from a letter he was mailing to a niece on the day of his accident: “A loving Heavenly Father continues to reveal truths to those who love Him and seek the truth.”
