Earlham Echo – August 11, 1977

Obituary

Wayne Diggs Thomas, eldest son of Lindsey and Lottie Diggs Thomas, was born November 15, 1895 on a farm east of Earlham, Madison County, Iowa, the same vicinity of which he spent his entire life. After being very ill the past nine months, he passed peacefully away Friday, August 5, 1977 at Veterans hospital, Des Moines, at the age of 81 years, eight months and 21 days.

Following graduation from Earlham Academy, he attended Highland Park College, where he majored in steam engineering. He was drafted into the service of his country during World War I, from which he was honorably discharged attaining the rank of sergeant, because of his leadership ability.

On April 3, 1923, he was united in marriage to Carol Hoskins. To this union two children were born: a daughter, Carolyn (Mrs. James Huglin of Dayton); a son, Niol, of Earlham.

In 1973, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. They were privileged to spend 54 years together.

The love of the Lord, his family and his community were outstanding attributes of this man

Wayne’s greatest joy was farming. He was a loyal neighbor and friend to any and was always ready to lend a hand. One of his proudest achievements was receiving the Century Farm award for his long-time family farm.

He was a birthright member of Earlham Friends Church where he held many offices and was the oldest continuous member of the congregation at the time of his death.

Wayne leaves many to mourn his passing: his loving and faithful wife, Carol, daughter Carolyn, son-in-law James Huglin, son, Niol, and daughter-in-law Alice, four grandchildren, Harlan Huglin, Jane Hummel, Linda and Erin Thomas; two great-grandchildren, John and Janet Hummel; one sister, Princelle, Mrs. E. R. Sifert, and many more relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Loyal, of Escondido, Calif.

Note: Burial was made in the Earlham cemetery.
