Obituary

Paul Elven Wallace, son of John Edwin and Delilah Walton Wallace, was born September 7, 1904, at Alden, Iowa. In 1905, the family with its seven children moved to the state of Kansas. In 1907, they moved to Missouri, then on to southern Iowa in 1913. It was here that he received his early education and grew to young manhood. He graduated from Parsons College in 1930, and on August 22 of that year he was united in marriage to Mary Rector in the Barhardt Chapel at the college. Together they began teaching at Attica, Iowa. This marked the beginning of his 40-year career as an educator in the Iowa schools. He later served as principal and coach in the Sewall school system, and it was here that one daughter, Marilyn Pauline, was born. Paul served as superintendent in Blakesburg, Eldon and Adel before joining the State Department of Public Instruction in 1953 where he served as Director of Supervision. In 1966 he left the department to once again become a superintendent of schools in the Audubon community school system. He served there with great pleasure for four years, then retired from his chosen profession in 1970.

Paul was a dedicated educator, who made his students’ and teachers one of his chief concern. He believed in nurturing an inquiring mind, and had a profound influence on many lives.

He always made time to help in community affairs, where he served ------ forms of service, and leadership. He was a member of the Masons, and he maintained his Masonic membership in the ----- Lodge.

Mr. Wallace’s death came on April 8, at Iowa Methodist hospital where his wife and daughter were with him. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers. His foster brother L. R. Walton of Elkhart, Indiana, survives him as does all of his immediate family, wife Mary, daughter Marilyn and her husband Bob, and three grandchildren Bill, Shelley and John, and Bill’s wife Fay. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the United Presbyterian church in Earlham with interment at the Earlham cemetery. Masonic graveside services were given by Madison Lodge No. 568 A.F. & A.M.
