Kathy Mathes, 54, of Afton died Feb. 18, 2008, at Clarke County Memorial Hospital in Osceola.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22 at Powers Funeral Home, junction of Highways 34 and 25, Creston. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.

Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the family present 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Heart Connection Children's Cancer Programs or Hope Ministries of Des Moines.

Kathryn Ruth Mathes daughter of Phyllis and Joe Arnold, was born March 14, 1953, in Creston. She graduated from Creston High School, and Southwestern Community College, and was a 1975 graduate of Central College in Pella. She taught in Winterset for 27 years.

On June 5, 1977, she married Gary Mathes in Winterset.

Besides photography, Kathy loved designing awards for her students, lesson plans, flyers and newsletters. She wrote and edited newsletters, including the Seven Bridges Chapter ABWA Bulletin in the 1980s, the Winterset Optimist Newsletter (1990-97), which twice won the Iowa District';s Bulletin Award, the Madison County Chamber Notes, the Bluegrass Optimist Bulletin of Creston and the PRAYeR-line. She also served as Secretary of the Union County Republican Central Committee.

Kathy won first place for a teaching strategy written for the American Express Teachers' National Competition, and was included in Who's Who of American Teachers.

In May 2002 she left teaching and designed the logos used on the 2004 Afton Sesquicentennial souvenirs and worked extensively as a volunteer for the Sesquicentennial and 2004 Extravaganza. She created numerous flyers and posters for the 2004 events and the 2005 Afton Extravaganza.

Survivors include her husband Gary Mathes of Afton; mother- and father in-law; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents.
