Obituary

William Peter Allen, son of Arthur Edson and Sarah Matilda (Wrightsman) Allen, was born January 6, 1899 near Mooresville, Indiana, and after some months of failing health, passed away on August 27, 1972, at the Henry County Memorial Hospital, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, at the age of 73 years, 7 months and 21 days.

On November 27, 1919, at Earlham, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Margaret Esther Cook, and to this union two daughters were born.

In his youth and after his marriage Mr. Allen did farming and worked in the implement business of Earlham which necessitated his traveling over that entire area and which naturally resulted in his knowing and being known by many people.

He also served as Deputy Sheriff of Madison county and in the day that a driver’s license became required by law he wrote the first driver’s license of Madison County.

Mr. Allen was also custodian of his home school of Earlham. He became superintendent of building and grounds of Iowa Wesleyan and Penn Colleges and also of the First United Methodist church of Mt. Pleasant. He and his wife took pride in their oversight and care of the Church property, grounds and facilities, giving full time and work beyond the call of duty. He was an active member of the First United Methodist church.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Besides his wife among those who survive are his two daughters: Mrs. Mary Lou Hill of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Mrs. Martha Lenore Rhoades, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; five grandchildren, one great granddaughter; two brothers, Arthur Von Allen of Earlham, Iowa, and Charles H. Allen, of Meadville, Pennsylvania; and a host of other relatives and friends, nieces, nephew and cousins.
