Earlham Echo – July 31, 1969

Obituary

Edith Newlin, daughter of Abner and Ella Newlin, died July 15, 1969 at the Lutheran Nursing Home in Perry, where she had been for about six years. She was 81.

She was born on a farm north of Earlham on November 26, 1887. She graduated from Penn College (now William Penn College), Oskaloosa, in 1915. Some years later she obtained a Master’s degree in psychology at Columbia University in New York City.

In her early years, she taught in Friends’ country schools in Iowa. The first was Cedar Grove School near Earlham, in her own home community. She also taught at Mapleside, in O’Brien county, and at Whittier.

From 1915 to 1918 she taught at Olney Friends’ Boarding School, near Barnesville, Ohio. Upon leaving there, she became a teacher in the Friends’ Girls’ School in Tokyo, Japan, where she stayed about ten years. On returning to the United States, she worked for 20 years as supervisor of a number of Quaker schools belonging to Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, Pennsylvania. After that, she was psychologist at the Overbrook School for the Blind in Philadelphia.

She is survived by two brothers, Roy L. Newlin, of Earlham, and Jay J. Newlin of Des Moines.

Edith Newlin was the leader who started the Young Friends’ Conference at Clear Lake, Iowa, which met each year for several years, and she also initiated the Junior Yearly Meeting. Many young Friends remember her leadership there. Many of her students and friends with whom she lived have mentioned her influence for good on their lives.
