Hannah Casper

Hannah Wood, daughter of Ella and Rhoda Wood, was born in Minard county, near Springfield, Ill. Feb. 16, 1840, and at the ripe old age of 80 years 8 months and 7 days passed from this life.

In August, 1857, she was united in marriage to John A. Casper, and to them two children were born, Mary and John. Mary lived to brighten the home, but a few months and then passed away in death. John, the son survives his mother and was with her for months before the end came.

Religiously she was a member of the Church of Christ, holding membership with the congregation at Winterset. In this relationship she was a beautiful Christian character, ever reflecting the spirit of the Master himself. Her life was a benediction to all with whom she came in contact and its influence will be felt for many months to come. In fact, we are inclined to believe that the influence for good, once started, will never end. It is said if you drop a pebble into the ocean the influence of the little ripples set in motion will not end in a million years. How much less then will the influence of a life like hers end? Is the influence of a life such as hers of less value than the ripples on the bosom of the ocean? We are not inclined to think so.

For more than two years she was a great sufferer, the last eleven weeks of which she was confined to her be. All that loving hands and medical skill could do to save her was done, but it availed not in the end. Through all this suffering she did not complain, and always greeted her loved ones and friends with a smile. With that smile glorified she met her husband and baby daughter on the other shore, and with the same greeting she will meet all those who are faithful even as was she.

The funeral sermon was delivered by Dr. N. C. Carpenter, her pastor, after which the body was laid to rest in the McDonald Cemetery.
