ERIK MCKEE, EARLHAM

Erik Jon McKee of Earlham died Oct. 19, 2008, in Johnston.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter with Pastors Leon Hodges and Jeffrey Keuning officiating. Burial was at Earlham Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Kuhn Funeral Homes of Dexter, Earlham and Redfield.

Erik McKee was born Aug. 3, 1944, in Kansas City, Mo., and became the adoptive son of Lloyd and Florence McKee. He spent his early years in Carson, graduating from Carson High School in 1962. He received his Bachelor of Science in zoology from the University of Iowa. He then attended the University of Kansas where he received a degree in mortuary science. In 1966, he married Joan Eitmann. Erik worked as a funeral director in Omaha, Greenfield and Winterset before purchasing the funeral homes in Dexter and Earlham in 1973, which he operated for nearly 10 years. He then purchased an interest in the Des Moines-Winterset Monument Company and worked as a memorial counselor until his health forced retirement in August. Erik was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he served in many capacities — including as an elder and congregational president. In addition, he was a member of the first Dexter Rescue team and the Earlham Rescue (for 20 plus years). He served both the Dexfield and Earlham school systems on various committees and was a member of the Dexfield School Board. He was the current president of Earlham Pioneer Place Board and served on several other county and local community committees.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother, Iris McKee Gilpin.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; two daughters, Ellen Wilwerding of Peachtree City, Ga., and Kerri Walker of Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers, Tom McKee of Omaha, Neb., and Bob Lembke of Gretna, Neb.; two sisters, LuCinda Goos of Ankeny and Chris Klein of Pella; and three grandchildren.
