Thelma “Alta” Schaefer

DAVENPORT -- Thelma “Alta” Schaefer, of Davenport, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at the family homestead in Davenport. Private family services will be held. Private burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Rock Island Botanical Gardens or to your favorite charity. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Alta was born April 6, 1928, in Winterset, Iowa, to Jake and Vella (Iams) (Iiams) Pettit. She was united in marriage 58 years to Vernon A. Schaefer in Davenport.

Alta and Vernon were livestock and grain farmers from 1946 until 1996. She owned and operated a craft shop for many years. Alta was involved in community activity, donating her time and energy to numerous organizations. She was president of Terspicorian and Varsity Dance Clubs. She and her husband traveled extensively. Her passions included gardening, flowers, her card club and crafts. She was the heart and soul of our family and she will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her husband, Vernon, of Davenport; three daughters, Marilyn (Larry) Schreiber, Carolyn (Patrick) Webber and Cheryl (Jim) Williams; son, Ken Schaefer, all of Davenport; six grandchildren, Curtis Schreiber, John Schreiber, Teresa Fey, Bryan Webber, Christie Webber and Jordon Williams; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Sam Pettit of Winterset, Iowa.
