Harriet McDonald was born in Guernsey county, Ohio, March 4, 1861 and died at her home in Winterset, July 1, 1917, aged 56 years 3 months and 27 days. She came to Iowa with her parents, Thomas and Eliza McDonald in the fall of 1863, locating on a farm in Douglas township, this county. She was the only daughter and youngest child of a family of eight children, only one of which, William S. McDonald of Douglas township survives her.
On Sept. 11, 1864 (1885) she was united in marriage with Hugh M. Clark. To this union were born three children, Lyda, who died in infancy, Mrs. Pearl Dean and Florence Clark. Mr. Clark died Dec. 5, 1890. In October, 1896 she was again united in marriage to Alex Ruth who departed this life Jan. 8, 1911. To this union her youngest daughter, Marie Ruth was born. On Jan. 6, 1916, she and Benjamin F. Bowlsby were united in marriage. The children and her husband were all present when she died. Her illness was not long, and all that loving hearts could do, could not turn aside the hand of death.
She grew to womanhood in Douglas township and was converted at the age of 14., when she united with the M. E. church at West Star, and at the time of her death was a member of the First M. E. Church of Winterset. She lived a faithful and consistent Christian life, and her Christian faith did not fail her when the call came. Her life was spent in sacrifice for those she loved, and her last act was one of thoughtfulness for her family, in the closing up of this life, the children have lost a faithful, loving mother, and the husband a devoted wife, and the influence of her life among her immediate friends and associates will not die. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning by Rev. M. M. Cable and burial made at the McDonald cemetery in Douglas township.
