June 27, 1917TWO PIONEERS ARE GONE - James Kirk of Monroe and James Kale of Scott, Answer Final Roll Call
James V. Kirk that rugged old pioneer and stalwart republican of Monroe township, died at his home near Kasson yesterday morning. His health had been failing for some time but his final illness was very brief.
He was born in Monroe county, Ohio in 1843. Enlisting in the rebellion at the age of twenty, he made a splendid record as a soldier. He saw prison life at Libby prison. While out on furlough, he came to Madison county and purchased a farm in Monroe township and then went back to the front to complete his term of service.
After the war, he followed the life of a trapper in Minnesota for a number of years, and finally settled on his farm. Here he married Martha Hamblin, whose parents were also pioneers in that township. They had no children, but adopted one daughter, who became the wife of Glen Conway.
“Jim” Kirk was a true representative of the rugged type of citizenship that settled in Iowa a half century ago. He had strong convictions and the courage to express them. He was plain spoken, straight forward in his dealings and scrupulously honest to the minutest detail in every transaction. He was a staunch republican and in earlier years took an active interest in county and township political affairs.
Transcriber note: Burial in Hamblin Cemetery.
