DANIEL BRIGGS BARRUS Obituary

Daniel Briggs Barrus was born in Providence, R.I. Dec 4, 1835 and died at his home in Winterset, Feb. 19, 1913 at the age of 77 years, two months and fourteen days. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife and five children, Mrs. Anna Mott of San Diego, Calif., Ella and Charles of this city, Eugene of Staples, Minn., William of Belle Plaine, one daughter having departed this life one years ago.

Mr. Barrus was the son of William and Lucy Barrus of Providence, R.I. His early life was spent with his parents in his native town, where he was educated. He was a student one year in Brown university, afterward graduating from a business college in Boston, Mass. When still quite a young man, he came west and located in Winona, Wis. Later he moved to Muscatine, Iowa, where he was engaged in the mercantile business for a number of years. There he met Miss Jeannette Dunsmore, to whom he was married in 1864, one child being born to this union. Mrs. Barrus dying in 1868. In 1872 he was married to Miss Maria Dunsmore. To this union were born six children. In 1879 Mr. Barrus moved with his family to Winterset, where he has resided for more than thirty years, leading an active life as a book keeper.

Besides his immediate family, he leaves to grieve his loss, an aged sister, Mrs. Col. Cadle of Cincinnati, Ohio and grandsons. Two years ago he became ill with pneumonia, never fully recovering his health, finally passing away with dropsy and heart failure.

Daniel Briggs Barrus was born in Providence, Rhode Island, December 4, 1833; died February 19, 1913, at his home in Winterset, Iowa at the age of 77 years, 2 months and 14 days.

Mr. Barrus was a son of Wm. And Lucy A. Barrus, of Providence, R. I. His early life was spent with his parents in his native town, where he was educated. He was a student one year at Brown University, afterward was a graduate of a business college of Boston, Mass.

When quite a young man, he left home and came west, locating in Winona, Wis. Later he moved to Muscatine, Iowa, where he was engaged in the mercantile business for a number of years. There he met Miss Jeanette Dunsmore, to whom he was married in 1864. One child was born to them. Mrs. Barrus died in 1868. In 1872 he was married to Miss Maria Dunsmore. To this union six children were born.

In 1879 he moved with his wife and two little girls to Winterset, where he has lived an active life as bookkeeper among the leading firms of the city.

About two years ago he became ill with pneumonia, never fully recovering his health, his death finally resulting from dropsy and heart failure. He passed away peacefully at peace with his God.

He leaves to mourn his loss a wife and five children: Mrs. Anna Mott, of San Diego, Calif.; Ella, who resides in Winterset; Eugene, of Staples, Minn.; Charles, of this city and William, of Belle Plaine; an aged sister, Mrs. Anna Cadle of Cincinnati, O.

Funeral services were held at the home Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. John H. Stewart of the Baptist church and interment made in the Rock City cemetery.
