LORAINA GROTH, THAYER

Loraina “Roni” Mae Groth, 63, of Thayer, died Oct. 20, 2008, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset where family will receive friends from 3–7 p.m. prior to the service. Prayer services also will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Missouri Valley. The family will gather at St. Paul to receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time. Burial will follow at Calhoun Cemetery in Missouri Valley. Memorials may be directed to the family. Arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset and Hennessey-Alman Funeral Home in Missouri Valley.

Loraina Groth was born Aug. 7, 1945, in Missouri Valley to Duane Arthur and Inez Loraine (Adams) Layton. Following graduation from West Harrison High School in 1963, she attended beauty school in Des Moines. On Oct. 23, 1966, she married Paul Groth at the Church of Christ in Missouri Valley. She and Paul resided on Paul’s family farm in Warren County where they began their farming career. In 1979, they moved to a farm near Thayer. Besides helping manage the farm, Loraina worked as a nurse’s aide at Madison County Memorial Hospital. She later was employed as a truck driver and scale house operator for Schildberg Construction for 17 years, retiring in 2000. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Modale.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Arthur Layton.

She is survived by her husband, Paul, of Thayer; two daughters, Lisa Pitt of Logan and Teena Groth of Orient; a son, Scott Groth of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Kenneth Layton of Modale; a sister, Peggy Hill of Modale; and five grandchildren.
