Obituary - JOHN COUCH

John D. Couch was born in Ohio, Sept. 21, 1846 and died at his home in Winterset, Iowa, Sunday, March 9, 1913, aged 66 years, 5 months and 16 days. At the age of sixteen he enlisted in Co. F 98th Regiment Ohio Volunteers in Harrison county, Ohio and was mustered into the United States service on the 5th day of January, 1863. On May 30, 1864 he was transferred to the 74th Ohio, with which regiment he served until the close of the war, and was mustered out with Co. B. 74th Ohio Volunteers at Louisville, Ky, July 10, 1865.

Shortly after the war, he came to Winterset, and learned the trade of a stone mason, which occupation he followed all through life. In 1875, he was married to Miss Mary Snyder. To this union three children were born, Wallace Couch of Winterset, Fred Couch of Adel and Clarence Couch, who died at Los Angeles, Calif., in 1905, and is buried in the Winterset cemetery.

He leaves beside his wife and two children to mourn his loss, two sisters, one living in Ohio and one in Indiana.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 on Tuesday afternoon at the home conducted by Rev. Hohanshelt. The G.A.R. had charge of the burial services.

At the age of 16 he enlisted in Co. F, 98th regiment, Ohio volunteers in Harrison county, Ohio, and was mustered into the United States service January 5, 1863. May 30, 1864 he was transferred to the 74th Ohio, with which regiment he served until the close of the war. He was mustered out with Co. B. 74th Ohio volunteers at Louisville, Ky., July 10, 1865 and shortly afterwards came to Winterset and learned the trade of stonemason, which occupation he followed through life.

In 1875 he was married to Miss Mary Snyder. To them were born three children: Wallace, Winterset; Fred, Adel; and Clarence, who died in 1905 at Los Angeles, Cal., and is buried in the Winterset cemetery. He leaves besides his wife and two sons to mourn his death, two sisters, one living in Indiana and one in Ohio.

The funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. Hohanshelt and interment was made in the Rock City cemetery.
