MRS. LUCY SOUDERS of New Virginia Dies

Mrs. Lucy Nettleton Souders of New Virginia died Thursday, August 11, 1966, at a Des Moines hospital. She was 83 years of age.

Mrs. Souders was the former Lucy Bumbarger, daughter of George and Roxanna Rundall Bumbarger. She was born at St. Charles December 19, 1882. Her life was spent in Madison and Warren counties. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She was married to Frank Souders November 18, 1903 in St. Charles.

Mrs. Souders is survived by seven children, Mrs. Roxanna Crawford of New Virginia, Mrs. Fern Jacobs of Lorimor, Mrs. Edith Reynolds of New Virginia, Mrs. Viola Smalley of Indianola, William Souders of Las Vegas, Nevada, Mrs. Georganna Rupp of Villisca, and Mrs. Wilma Jones of El Monte, California; 24 grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Emma Hayworth of Indianola; and a brother, Wesley Bumbarger of St. Charles.

Funeral services were conducted from the St. Charles Church of Christ Sunday by the Rev. Steward Fitzgerald. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.

Mrs. Lucy Souders

Lucy N. Bumbarger Souders, fourth child of George and Roxanna Bumbarger, was born on a farm near St. Charles, Iowa, December 29, 1882, and departed this life August 11, 1966 at the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 12 days.

On November 18, 1903 she was united in marriage to Frank Souders of St. Charles. To this union eight children were born, six daughters and two sons: Roxanna, Mrs. Fon Crawford of New Virginia; Fern, Mrs. George Jacobs, of Lorimor; Edith, Mrs. Elbert Reynolds of New Virginia; Viola, Mrs. Arland Smalley of Indianola; William of Las Vegas, Nevada; Georganna, Mrs. Gordon Rupp of Villisca, Wilma Jones of Elmonte, California and Frank Alfred who passed away at the age of 15 months.

Outside of living 10 years in Villisca, her entire life was spent in Madison and Warren counties.

At the age of 16 years Lucy united with the church of Christ in New Virginia.

Lucy enjoyed writing letters and keeping in touch with members of the Bumbarger family. One high point in her life was the Bumbarger reunion, of which she kept a family record of when her loved ones were all together.

She leaves to mourn her passing her seven children mentioned, 24 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, five son-in-laws and one daughter-in-law whom she greatly loved. Also one sister, Mrs. Arthur Haworth, of Indianola, one brother, Wesley Bumbarger of St. Charles. Besides these she leaves a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 14 at the St. Charles Church of Christ. Burial is in the St. Charles cemetery.
