OPAL ELDERKIN DIES AT RED OAK

Was Granddaughter of First Settlers in Madison County

Mrs. Glenn P. Elderkin, a resident of Madison county most of her life, dies Monday, June 3, at a hospital in Red Oak. She was 81 years of age.

Mrs. Elderkin was the former Opal Clark, daughter of Joel N. and Sylvia Darnell Clark. She was a granddaughter of Caleb and Ruth Clark, members of the first family of permanent settlers in Madison County.

Her life was spent in Madison county until 1943, when she and her husband moved to Des Moines. She returned to Winterset in 1958.

She was married to Glenn P. Elderkin on Jan. 8, 1908. He preceded her in death in 1958.

She was a member of the University Christian church in Des Moines, and a former member of the First Christian church of Winterset.

Surviving are two sons, Frank Elderkin of Winterset and John Elderkin of Vinton; four daughters, Mrs. Victor Peterson of Red Oak, Mrs. Henry Brueck of Battle Creek, Mrs. John Holley of Nevada and Mrs. Thomas Newton, Jr. of Des Moines; and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services were to be held this Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Firsts Christian church of Winterset, conducted by the Rev. Tom Fogelsong of Des Moines and the Rev. Robert A. Owens, local pastor. Burial was to be made in the Winterset Cemetery.
