Obituary

Rensselear Hill Merrell was born October 28, 1828, in Oswego county, New York.

When he was about the age of ten years his parents removed to Auburn, N. Y., where he grew to manhood.

In the year 1856 he left the old homestead and went to Rock Island, Ills. On June 15, 1857, he was united in marriage to Julia A. Bishop, who survives him. They spent the first ten years of their happy married life in Davenport, Iowa. From that city they moved to DeSoto, Iowa, and in 1873 they came to Winterset, where he has been engaged in business ever since.

An only sister, Laura Merrell, and his brothers, Theodore and William, are the only survivors of the family, and still reside at the old homestead in Auburn, N. Y.

R. H. Merrell was upright and just in all his dealings with his fellow men, and to an unusual degree was esteemed and loved by his neighbors.

While belonging to no church, he was strongly religious and was active in his support of the M. E. church, to which his beloved wife belongs. He was a trustee during the building of the present church edifice.

R. H. Merrell was generous to a fault and was active in all public enterprise, having in view the good of the people. Opposed to the saloon, he had strong sympathy for those who fell under its influence, and helped many a poor fellow to a better life.

He was a kind husband and loved his home, where he is now so sadly missed.
