FERN KIRKPATRICK, NEW VIRGINIA

Fern Marie Kirkpatrick, 97, of New Virginia died Sept. 21, 2008, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 26, at Kale Funeral Home with Pastor Ben Turner officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Virginia Fire & Rescue. Burial was at New Virginia Cemetery.

Fern Kirkpatrick was born May 21, 1911, in Winterset to Oliver Ellsworth and Della May (Wright) Tracy. She received her education in a Madison County country school, graduating from Winterset High School. On March 11, 1934, she was united in marriage to Elvis Van Kirkpatrick at the family home in Madison County. A farm wife, Fern also worked alongside her husband in his carpentry business. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church near Winterset.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Vernon; a stepson, Junior; a granddaughter, Lisa May House; a grandson,Bradley Bruce Kirkpatrick; twin sister, Faye Acton; two brothers, Raymond Tracy and George Tracy; a half brother, Cleo Roy; and two half sisters, Jessie Roy and Edna Crum.

She is survived by three sons, Eddie Kirkpatrick of Des Moines, Dale Kirkpatrick of Palmer, Neb., and Ronnie Kirkpatrick of New Virginia; four daughters, Delores Prather of Bellflower, Calif., Aletha House of Martensdale, Ladonna Smith of Winterset and Bonnie Smith of New Virginia; a brother, Wallace Tracy of Osceola; a sister, Irene Smothers of Cincinnati; and 27 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral serviced for Fern Kirkpatrick, 97, will be 1 p.m., Friday at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola. Family will greet friends from 6 to 8 Thursday evening. Interment will be at New Virginia Cemetery.

Survivors include her sons, Eddie Kirkpatrick of Des Moines, Dale (Kyle) Kirkpatrick of Palmer, NE, Ronnie (Marilyn) Kirkpatrick of New Virginia; daughters, Delores Prather of Bellflower, CA, Aletha (Fred) House of Martensdale, Ladonna (Terry) Smith of Murray, Bonnie (David) Smith of New Virginia; daughter-in-law, Judy Kirkpatrick of New Virginia.

Memorials may be directed to New Virginia Fire & Rescue.
