Services for Paul Stillman

This is a portion of the memorial service for Paul Stillman, a former editor and publisher of the Earlham Echo.

The service was conducted by Dr. Kenneth A. Carlson, minister of First Methodist Church of Glendale, California, on February 13, 1964.

“Paul Stillman was born in Jefferson, Iowa, February 10, 1887—77 years ago. His father, Frank J. Stillman, had a government job in Washington, thus Paul graduated from high school there and attended Georgetown University for one year. Later the family moved to Riceville, Iowa, and Paul attended the University of Minnesota for three years and there studied electrical engineering.

However, he decided to enter the newspaper business and bought a community paper, The Earlham Echo, at Earlham, Iowa, in 1910. Paul published this fine paper for 18 years and it was in Earlham that he and Irma exchanged their wedding vows June 2, 1917. And now for these many years they have shared the great adventure and joy of their lives together.

They came to Glendale in 1928 and Paul worked for his uncle for a time in the printing business and then 34 years ago bought the Franklin Press.

“I remember some 20 years ago when I was getting started in the Methodist ministry and was serving our Central Methodist Church in Glendale. At that time Paul printed our bulletin and monthly newspaper, and I remember the great care and special attention that he gave to this. It was always a real personal delight for me to slip into his shop and there we could chat and josh back and forth for a little time. I was always impressed by his great dedication to his task and his very cordial and gracious spirit and sense of humor. Now he has been printing for 30-some years, and very wonderfully so, our First Methodist Church weekly worship bulletin.”

He had been a Mason and a member of the Eastern Star in Iowa, and we have been proud to have Paul and Irma as members of our First Methodist Church here in Glendale. He read widely, loved people, and was himself greatly loved. He was a man of exceedingly even temper and a wonderful person with whom to live in the family relationship. Needless to say, he will be greatly missed by all who have known and loved him, both within and outside the family circle.

Paul leaves his widow, Irma; two sons, Robert J. of Glendale, and Paul E. of La Canada; two daughters, Agnes Reynolds of Binghamton, New York, and Esther Russell of La Cresenta; a sister, Charlotte Adams of Glendale, and 10 grandchildren.

Burial was in Grandview cemetery, Glendale, California.
