Theresa "Babe" Cain Harkin

Theresa “Babe” Elleen Cain Harkin, 76, of Norwalk died Sept. 21, 2008.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at St. Patrick’s Irish Settlement Church in rural Cumming. Visitation will be from 2–7 p.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 24) at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset, where family will be present to receive friends from 5–7 p.m. A prayer service will follow at 7 p.m. Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery in Cumming. Memorial contributions may be directed to The American Cancer Society, 8634 Hickman Road, Suite D, Des Moines 50325 or the Maryknoll Sisters, c/o web office, Box 307, Maryknoll, NY 10545.

Theresa Harkin was born Dec. 27, 1931, in Des Moines to Thomas Bertram and Laura (Kelly) Dooley. She attended rural Madison County schools before attending Mt. Loretto in Council Bluffs, graduating in 1949. In 1952, she married Hugh Francis Cain at St. John’s Catholic Church in Cumming. Following Francis’ death in 1964, she later married Joseph Harkin in 1967 at St. John’s in Cumming. In addition to working on her family’s century farm in Warren County, Theresa also worked at the Hy-Vee deli in West Des Moines. She was a lifelong resident of Madison and Warren counties and a member of St. Patrick’s Irish Settlement Church and Altar and Rosary Society.

She was preceded in death by both husbands, Francis and Joseph; her parents; a sister, Dorothy Lillie; and four brothers, Vince, Louis, Ray and Dick Dooley.

She is survived by her nine children — Charlotte Haines of Truro, Sheila Lynch of Van Meter, Mary Theresa McChesney of Milwaukee, Wis., Paul Cain of Winterset, Brendan Cain of Burns, Ore., Cecilia Lynch of Bristow, Va., Maureen Dietz of Sentinel Butte, N.D., and Hugh Cain and Matthew Harkin, both of Norwalk; a brother, Jim Dooley of Winterset; and 24 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
