Obituary

Thomas Jordon Shaver was born February 11, 1823 in New York state, and died August 13, 1908 near De Soto in Dallas county, Ia., aged 85 years, 6 months and 2 days. He went to Iriquois county Canada when a young man and there was married in 1868 to Sarah A. Shaffer. They then moved to Boone county, Iowa, but soon removed to Madison county and located in Union township six miles east of Winterset, where he has made his home ever since excepting that during the last three years he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Harriett J. Pyers.

To them were born seven children, three daughters and four sons. Two sons and one daughter having died, one in infancy and the other two having grown to maturity. The living children are Mrs. Henrietta Stichler, of Murray, Ia.; Mrs. Harriett J. Pyres, of De Soto, Ia.; Geo. Even Shaver, of Kimberling, Nevada, and Rowland B. Shaver, of Pender, Nebr.

He was a strong man nearly all his life and had had very little sickness. For ten years he has been blind from cataract. His last sickness continued from July 4th until his death.

He was never a church member and never made a public demonstration of religion, but in his last years he expressed great patients and often struggled in his sense of sin as he felt its heavy load, and he often prayed.

Among the bereaved ones besides the children, there are eight grandchildren and a brother-in-law who lives at Billings, Montana, and many old friends and neighbors in the neighborhood of Union Chapel.

Four years ago his wife and companion of 34 years died and now he is asleep side by side with her until the resurrection day. We trust they may both have found peace in God and deliverance in eternity.

The funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at Union Chapel eight miles east of Winterset and the interment was in the cemetery near by.
