FRANK ELDERKIN, Winterset

Frank Joel Elderkin, 80, of Winterset, died of cancer on Sept. 2, 1995. Funeral services were Sept. 5 at the First Christian Church in Winterset. The Rev. Bobby Dickerson officiated the services and burial was at the Winterset Cemetery.

He was born in Madison County on Aug. 1, 1915 to Glenn P. and Opal Lorraine (Clark) Elderkin. He married Sarah Louise Busch on May 30, 1942 at Brownwood, Texas. He was a retired teacher and farmer. He had lived in Winterset since 1950.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Winterset. He had served in the U.S. Army during WW II, receiving a Silver Star Medal and the Purple Heart. He was a member and past president of the Farm Bureau; a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodges of Macksburg and Winterset; 4-H; former school board member; former Madison County Fair Board member; and a former Sunday school teacher. He had a teacher's certificate from State Teachers college (U.N.I.); he was a graduate of Iowa State University; and had taught country school in Madison County, then at I.S.U. and then at Middle Tennessee State.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and one sister.

Surviving relatives include his wife; two sons, Frank C. Elderkin and wife Melinda of Bowling Green, Kentucky and Gary Elderkin and wife Karen of Winterset; one daughter Donna Young and husband Ronald D. of Flora, Ill.; three sisters, Dawn Brueck of Ida Grove, Marguerite Holley of Nevada, and Mary Newton of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
