William Simmerman’s family, living about three miles south of Barney, in Clarke county have a serious time with the measles, resulting in three deaths within forty-eight hours. The children were thought to be recovering, when on Saturday, March 11th, little Bessie took a relapse and died about noon. She was about three years old. Laura, the oldest daughter, had not fully recovered but was able to help care for the other members of the family, overcome with grief, she was taken very sick and died before midnight. She lived about forty minutes after the change. It is supposed she died of heart failure.

She was married to Mr. Henry Stewart on December 25th, 1897. Scarcely three months of married life when the death summons came and left the young husband to mourn the death of his loved one.

On Sunday night, March 12th, the mother passed to the great beyond. Drs. Ayers and Hasty were in attendance and did all they could to save the life of the mother, but all in vain. Jesus called to her, “It is enough, come up higher” and enjoy eternal life.

She was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Felix Thurman, and leaves father, mother, four brothers, husband and three children to mourn her departure.

The remains of Mother and two daughters were laid to rest in the Saint cemetery. The bereaved have the sympathy of all in their dark hour of sorrow.
