Obituary

Died, at her home at Maple Grove, Madison county, Iowa, at 2 o’clock Friday morning, March 4, 1898, Mrs. Daniel Grosscup, aged almost sixty-seven years.

Isabel Ryatt was born in Ashland county, Ohio, March 19, 1831. Her childhood, youth and earlier womanhood were spent in Pennsylvania, where she united with the church at the age of ten. She was married to Daniel Grosscup, of the same county, January 3, 1854, after which she became a member of the Lutheran church, in which communion she remained until her death. She was the mother of seven children—three of whom died in childhood. Her aged husband, four children and two grandchildren survive her.

In 1876 the family removed to Madison county, Iowa, and settled on the place which has ever since been the family home.

The funeral services were held at the residence Sunday, March 7, at 11 o’clock, conducted by Rev. James Sawhill, of the United Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. W. F. Butman, of the Evangelical Association, and Rev. Maxwell of the United Presbyterian church. The services were begun by singing by request the 23d Psalm—a favorite with the departed.

The address was a plain, practical one, full of comfort and godly admonition. The interment was in the Winterset cemetery.

Mrs. Grosscup was a great sufferer for many years, and for ten years or longer had not been able to walk, or to rise from her chair.

All these years of affliction were passed in patient resignation and quiet waiting for the final summons. When that summons came she was ready, having often expressed the desire to “go home to rest.”
